Ring a Ring of Roses
by Louie Pollard
There was nothing, just the dim lighting of the old oil lamps. Then he heard a voice, “ring a ring of roses, a pocket full of posies, a-tishoo, a-tishoo we all fall down.” Sam was puzzled. He didn’t think that little girls would be playing this late.
He started to run a little faster but the voice was gaining on him. “RING A RING OF ROSES!” It was taunting him. He tore his eyes away from the little girl and looked in front of him and there she was. In front of him with a kitchen knife in her hand, Sam twitched as she plunged the dagger further into his body; his vision blurred and he fell to the floor.
Blood trickled down the road and into the gutter…and in the distance a faint voice…”a-tishoo, a-tishoo we all fall down.”
“Beep, Beep, Beep,”
Sam woke up. He brushed his hand over his forehead. He got out of bed and went to get ready for school. All day he sat staring out of the window, thinking about his dream. Across the field there was a girl singing. He couldn’t hear her, but he knew what she was singing. Then she pulled out a glinting sharp object. Before he knew it, it was flying at him.
“Sam!” He woke up, “daydreaming again? I won’t tolerate it, to the head, NOW!” Sam gathered up his books and plodded out. After 20 minutes of shouting Sam left the office. Once he had left he heard a yell from inside. He thought it was the teacher throwing a tantrum, but he was wrong, if he had looked back, if he had turned round, he would have seen the blood splattered on the blurry window of the heads office.
When he got back to his class it was empty, then he looked at the clock, it was 5 o’clock. “Oh damn! I’m going to miss ‘trick or treating’ “ He dashed home.
He fumbled in his pocket for his key, he took it out and slotted it in the lock. He tossed his bag on the stairs and ran past it. He flung open his wardrobe and pulled out his brand new Dracula costume. Wearing his outfit he ran down stairs and dived out the front door. From then the night was a usual Halloween… but the story doesn’t end there.
Bill, Jim and Sam were heading home after a long nights work trick or treating; it was pouring with rain now, the occasional flash of lighting and the glowing pumpkins were their only light. Sam was the only one that wasn’t too comfortable with the eerie silence. As they were walking they realized that they were at 666 street…
“Hang on” said Jim.
“666 street?” questioned Bill.
Sam read the small print at the bottom of the sign. ‘devil sign’s TM by: dontturnround.co.uk’
They didn’t know what to think. Should they keep walking into the distance or should they turn round and go back.
Jim was shaking “I'm going back” panted Jim he turned round and
started to run… “AHHH!!” a blood curdling scream echoed through the street. Bill and Sam turned round, he saw what looked like a 6 year old girl staring down at the mangled body of …Jim. She looked up at the new arrivals “we all fall down” she sung.
Bill was having a emotional breakdown. He collapsed to his knees. “no.” he said silently. And he looked up at Sam and said “he was my best friend.” He turned his head to look at the girl “I’m going to kill you.” Bill was screaming through his tears “I’M GOING TO KILL YOU!!”
Bill ran at the beast charging furiously. Sam called to him, “Wait! Stop!” but it was too late, the knife went straight through Bill’s body several times.
His red sticky life fluid poured onto the floor. Sam just stood there crying. Two of his friends had been killed, right in front of him. For a moment he was thinking to just let her get him. But he wasn’t going to go like that. He ran down the slim alleyway and skidded at a corner, “Thump!” he bashed his arm on the corner, but he kept running… nothing was going to stop him now.
He came to a fence. It was his only option; he had to climb. He grabbed onto the fence and pulled and pushed his way up. He got to the top and glanced back. The girl (more like the…thing) was skipping round the corner… with the knife in her hand. She stopped and glanced up and started singing.
Singing her death song “ring a ring of roses a pocket full of posies…” he wasn’t going to hang around for the end. He jumped off the fence and started to run he looked back, to his horror she was gone… he gulped and turned his head as he decided to face the devil.
There she was. “What are you?” Sam asked. It didn’t reply. “I said: WHAT ARE YO…” it interrupted “I am your worst nightmare” it exclaimed, “now” it continued “I want to sing”. It started to sing as it raised it’s knife. Sam shut his eyes tightly and waited for his doom.
Suddenly, without any warning there was a massive strike of lightening from the sky. Sam opened his eyes and saw the knife flash as the crackling electricity hit. The beast’s unearthly scream echoed through the alley as it fell forward on the blood covered blade. Slowly blood pooled out and around the little girl.
Seven years later Sam no longer cried himself to sleep, he had moved on. But he still remembered Bill’s bravery and missed his friend Jim. Sam hadn’t been trick or treating since that day, but today he was wearing his new Dracula outfit and he wanted to show it off. He ran out the front door, “slam” the door shut behind him leaving the house empty, empty and silent except for a distant voice singing, “Ring a ring of roses, a pocket full of posies, a-tishoo, a-tishoo, we all… fall… down!”
