I don't think being an English teacher will help in this instance. The child made a reasonable connection between the colour blue (all she could see) and the dead girl's blue eyes.

I figure the girl of the story happens to be the dead girl. She was seeing herself.

In any case, the author's attempt is what the site is about. And these kids come up with some fairly complex stuff, to be sure.
